I purchased a USED 2002 Honda Odyssey in January of 2009 and the car had about 90,000 miles on it. Everything was going smoothly and I LOVED the car and was SO happy to finally have enough room for my two little boys(ages 7 months and 2 years at the time.) In July, 2009 my check engine light came on for NO reason while I was driving one day and I figured it was just because I needed to get my oil changed.  About 2 weeks later, my gears began to slip. The TCS light would go on and off and the green DRIVE light would blink too!   I was actually on the off ramp on the highway and had to pull to the side of the road because I couldn't get my car to go.  It was then that I took the car to the Auto Zone and had them run a diagnstics test on it for free. They told me that there were about 6 errors from the transmission and that I should have it replaced. To make my story short, I called Honda and had the same run around that everyone else in this forum has had and was told to bring the Honda in for their own persoanl diagnostics test ($90.00) and then told that it would cost about $3500 to put in a new transmission. Well, I don't have that kind of money, so I took it to a personal mechanic and had a transmission rebuilt for about $2100 dollars.  I picked it up about a week ago and the problem still wasn't fixed, so it is back in the shop.  All in all, this has cost me over $2,000 and I am TICKED!  I will NEVER buy a Honda again! :(

Same boat here, but I took mine to Honda.  Did the personal mechanic offer any warranty?

My warranty through a personal mechanic is for 2 years.  Since my original problem, I have had to take my van in 2 more times. The first time, I was about 70 miles from home and the transmission hose came off and sprayed tranny fluid all over the road and started smoking. It is now in the shop again for the same tranny problem. This car is the biggest piece of crap. When I pick it up from the mechanic, I am putting a FOR SALE sign on it.  Getting rid of this pile of rubble!!!
