I have a 2003 Odyssey with 118,000 miles on it.  About 2 weeks ago I noticed a high pitch whining sound when I would first start the vehicle.  Then 4 days ago it got real cold (below zero degrees) out and the tranny took about 2 minutes to engage into drive.  Also noticed that the engine was revving up when shifting gears.  I took it to my local Honda Dealer to have it checked out and thats when I found out that I'm another one of thousands with a bad transmission.  The whining noise was coming from the differential bearing (transfers torque from the tranny to the transaxle) which is breaking down and the tranny is full of metal filings.   I never had the issue of the engine light or TCS lights illuminating, just the symptoms I discribed previously.

Anyway, Honda has offered to replace the transmission, Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and warranty both for 3 yrs/36,000 miles.  All this for the small fee of $3900.00, what a deal!   The original quote was $3850 for the tranny and an additional $1700 for the ECU with no warranty included so they believe I should be happy.  I have always had good service at my local dealership so I not pointing a finger at them.  It's obvious that Honda Corp. has put out a defective product (Odyssey Transmissions) for years and they need to own up to it - PERIOD.

It's not just the Odyssey, it's every vehicle that Honda has put this defective crappy tranny in: Odyssey, Pilot, Accord, Acura TL, CL, MDX.

It's such a known issue.  Google any of those names with "transmission failure" behind and you'll see tens of thousands of complaints online.

And to think Toyota is doing a major recall because of floormats because people have died.  I would think transmission is more important than floor mats, but Honda wont do squat.  It takes people dying and in the case of the Odyssey, possibly and entire family dying and it's on every news channel before they will do something about it.  That oil jet recall they did back in 04 never really addressed the actual problem which is the 3rd gear clutch pack.

It is a total BS. For me, I decieded to spend my money elsewhere, warranty or not to fix my transmission. I will die before I spend another dime with Honda. Crapped out transmission at 73K. Can you believe it?? They know they have a defective part but in stead of fixing the problem they are putting on a bid band-aid and anyone who is unlucky enough, oh well...SOL.

To think I spent $1.5k over sticker price and waiting a month for this POS 8 years ago. F*&^ you Honda.
