I'm the original owner of a 2002 Honda Odyssey LX and I've been plagued with numerous problems on this vehicle.  First of all, I've had two transmissions fail.  The first one failed following the recall service in May of 2005 (69,228 miles).  The Honda service dealer indicated that I had not serviced the vehicle properly, since I had gone elsewhere to have my servicing completed.  After retrieving all my records across town, I was able to prove to Honda that I had properly maintained my transmission/vehicle.  Honda replaced the transmission 100%.  It is now 4/2010 (just under 162,000miles) and the engine check light came on with P0740 code (Torque converter solenoid clutch open).  Needless to say, the dealer replied that the transmission failed and had to be replaced.  The initial negociation between the dealer service manager and the regional service manager resulted in a total price of $3641.00 for full replacement and labor. According to the dealer service manager, the discount was about 10% from Honda and 13% coming from the dealer.  I'm trying to negociate with the service manager to only pay a total of $2800.  He indicated that he would try to get it down to $3000.  He is still crunching the numbers.....

Meanwhile, I've also been plagued with other issues:

-the haudraulic door motors and rollers failed after 5yrs

-the vent window motors failed after 2 years

-the front console electrical system is quirky. ie. the fuel indicator and the coolant temperature indicator displayed high coolant temp. when the fuel level fell below half.

We had our transmission replaced almost 2 years ago.  I just took it in to have a strut replaced and the two front motor mounts were broke.  You might be due for some new motor mounts too.  The guy told me they are replacing lots of motor mounts lately...

You might have to open a case with Honda to see if they will cover more on the transmission.

Good luck

I had the motor mounts replaced in 2005!  It might be necessary again. ??? Thanks

Oh you should be fine then...  He said the original motor mounts were not that strong, but the replacement ones were redesigned and stronger.  You probably have the new ones already....  The joys of owning an Odyssey.  You got me worried about  haudraulic door motors now.  How much did that cost?

I believe it cost about $350 a door.  I got myself a real lemon!!

I just had my 02 Acura TL tranny replaced yesterday.  I only have 85,000 on the original tranny and have always babied it and changed the transmission flued religiously.  I'm still under on the  miles but over on the time limit.  Honda wanted to charge me $3k which is BS when this is a known faulty designed transmission.

The local transmission shop I took it to is all to familiar with the problem.  They have been replacing tons and tons of Honda Accords, Pilots, Odysseys...Acura, TL, CL, MDX which all use the same shitty transmission.  He took me to the back of his shop where he had 30 (i kid you not) Honda trannies on the rack waiting to be installed.

He told me it's because the tranny filter is located inside the tranny itself and not outside (the way it should be) so you CAN'T change it.  On top of this, it's a paper type filter which will NOT hold up to constantly be submerged in tranny fluid..eventually it will clog and deteriorate and guess what happens then??!!

Why any engineer would put a filter internally where it cannot be changed is beyond me...that person should be shot.

Anyhow, I was charged $945 for the rebuilt tranny and $495 for the install.  Total is about $1,500 with tax.  Came with a 2 yr 24k mile warrenty as well as long as I go back to them every 15,000 to have the tranny fluid changed by them $40.  Figured I would only need to go back once since at 30k the warrenty would've already been over.  Gonna get ride of this POS before the warrenty is up of course. No more HONDA or ACURA pieces of crap ever for me again.
