We have 286,000 miles on our 1999 Honda Odyssey and the van is currently at the auto shop getting a new rebuilt transmission - our 6th!  We were told that the condenser is too small for the transmission and the used transmission shop is now putting a larger condenser on the transmission to alleveate any issues.  Our transmissions up to this point were averaging 60,000 miles but this last one only got 21,000.

Love our Honda Odyssey but this is getting so frustrating!

I think they forgot to put in the Maintenance Schedule:

Replace Transmission Every 60K miles!

Mine lasted to 80K

:-)

At least I got 150,000 on one transmission -- however, I was hoping to get 200,000+ on my 2001!  I have babied her and I hate to let her go, but I doubt that I will buy another Odyssey!

Wow, you're on #6.  I dumped mine after #3.  I'm curious though, did Honda cover any of your transmissions, or have you paid for them all?

All of our transmissions were covered through Honda except the one last July, we hit a brick wall with Honda.  They would not give us anything at all, while we were in the dealership, a women next to me was dealing with the same thing and it was her 2nd transmission and Honda had only offered 25%.

The key to ours getting covered was having all of our service at the dealership.  We used the get out of jail card from Honda - the settlement when they extended the warranty on one of them.  I had actually paid for one of them after getting a "deal" from the regional manager and called the American Honda phone number and was reimbursed for the full cost.  Even though I said I would pay my portion, before I got the car back I just didn't feel that it was right and pursued it with American Honda direct.

I really worked my way up the line - we were told the regional manager had authorized the deal and once we got the details, we called American Honda direct.  Shared our long term customer status with Honda, reviewed our service records.  The first couple were fairly easy to get answers, but the third replacement took a little longer but they agreed to pay for the full replacement amount and even paid for a rental car.

I was so shocked last July when I was stone-walled with Honda - but I felt that my luck would eventally run out.

Thanks for responding.  Good for you for not giving up.  Honda did pay for my first replacement as well, but they would only pay $1000 towards the third replacement.  I think over the last year, they have just gotten so many complaints, that they're finally saying "no."  Good luck on transmission #6!
