I bought my 2000 Odyssey new.  All services done at the Honda dealer.  At around 90,000km, the engine light came on.  I asked the Honda service dept about this, and was asked if I had recently filled up the gas tank.  Because I did, I was told to wait and see if the light went off.  It did, but of course came on before my next service.  At this time I had the codes checked, and was told that nothing needed to be done at this time.  Of course I trusted them.  At 120,000km, now the engine light is on as well as the TCS light.  Short trips around town were never a problem, until a 4hr road trip in the summer.  When I accelerated, there would be a slight delay as the gear "slipped" and then a slow acceleration, more noticeable on hills.  I was afraid to stop not knowing if I would be stranded somewhere.

Took the vehicle straight to my Honda dealer. Now P0740 indicated I needed a new transmission.  I am now 4 months over the warranty extension.  Told tranny would be $4500.  I then wrote a letter to Honda Canada.  Received a phone call saying they would pay for the tranny, and I would have to pay the $1400 labor charge.  No way!  So then I went and spoke to the Honda service manager, who agreed to reduce the labor charge to $740.

Bottom line, Honda should have paid for the whole thing.  I started having problems well before the warranty expired, but they knowingly dragged this problem on.  If I understand correctly, the 99-01 settlement does not cover Canadians, only Americans.

No More Hondas NA Posted: 05/13/2009

I had the same issue you described accelerating on hills and it dropping out of gear and TCS light.  But I had to pay $3000 for mine!  Crooks!

OK, now 20,000kms after this original email, I now need another tranny.  This would be the 3rd tranny on this van.  I called Honda who offered $1,000 toward the new tranny or to put towards a new Honda vehicle.  Are you kidding me...like I would ever buy Honda again!!!  I told Honda this had to be repaired as I can't afford a new vehicle, so I get a phone call a couple days later stating they'll pay 50% of $4200, and then I will have to pay the install.  How do I sell this, knowing some other innocent person will be stuck with this junk?

I recommend taking the steps highlighted at this website. If nothing less, please file with the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation noted on this website.  http://www.hondaproblems.com/problems/transmission-failure.shtml

My 2nd transmission just went up in my Odyssey at 90K miles!  Honda put in a new transmission on my 2001 Odyssey in 2006 as part of the recall.  Now this transmission went up.  I was just told yesterday that the cost for the new transmission would be $5,900!!!!  ARE YOU KIDDING ME???  The service mgr told me that she would call Honda and ask for help.  Typically they only do 50/50 she said.  So, bottom line is that I am paying for the job because I know that $5,900 is padded so high they want me to think Honda is helping when they say 50/50.

Most people pay around $3000, so yes I think you are right...  They have padded the price to make you think you are getting a break when they come back with a price around $3000....

Yep.  I'm having a hard time now ... trying to decide new car (NO HONDA EVER AGAIN) or bite the bullet and get the transmission done, 100K servicing, AND new tires.  Might just be better to get a new car, be happy with the new stuff since my van is almost 10 years old, and never by a Honda again ... AND have a warranty!

You probably have broken motor mounts too.

i had 2000 odyssey which had around 90,000 and the engine light on all time, also the tcs light on,i think i had the same transmission problems just like other people. i thought Honda odyssey is the top rate mini van for so many years, why they don,t find a way to solve the problem? my family member owns a lot of Honda produsts , this odyssey give me a nightmare which i don,t know when it will broke down on me.

I bought my 01 brand new. !1 st car I ever drove off the lot !! Its a LEMON!! I just put 128k mi now the tcs n engine light is on again!!

IM ON MY THIRD TRANSMISSION!! I have tried to have them give me a new van for years. of course they will say its out of warranty. they have fixed it ever 30k miles. It seems like they only last 30-40k miles.

I think its time I get a lawyer. Has anybody else been through 3 transmissions before 100k miles?

Any direction in getting Honda's attention would be appreciated.

My Honda Odyssey's transmission gave up in 12/2009. I have to pay $2900.00 to have a remanufactured tranny from Honda. To make the long story short, Honda paid 25% of the bill. Two years later, the transmission gave up again. But the worst thing, before it happened, I almost had an accident due to tranny malfunction. It stalled while driving on I-4 at a 60 miles/hr speed. This important data should be noted so everyone will be notified and be educated. Anyway, Honda had changed the tranny at no charge to me since its still under the 3 yrs warranty.

I have to spend my own money for the rental car for 4 days. However, my question is, how long would I have to drive my Odyssey before it gets a tranny malfunction again? I have currently 124,000 miles and I'm hoping it serve for couple more years. Is it worth keeping this kind of van or better get rid of it?

I bought my 2000 odyssey last june 2012 now is may 2013 at the mileage 132 k  miles , now the Van come up with transmission problem on first gear and second gears , probaly this is the first time I own a honda and also the last time, because the reason I don't rely on this car is , it 's not only this 2000 model but the following years model also have the same problem. how come they let this happen at first place?
