My 2002 Odyssey transmission started shifting irregularly at about 75k miles. Took it to the dealership and was told tranny was bad and about to go. I was still able to drive the car and eventually was able to convince a dealer to give me $5,000 for it as trade-in on a 2010 Odyssey.
Prior to trading vehicle I tried the Honda customer service route and got nowhere. The dealer did advocate for me but this was summer 2009 and the economy was in the tank so no one was willing to deal. Years before I had another problem with a 96' Odyssey and I sent a letter fedex to Honda of America's president. This got me 75% of the cost of a major repair.
I wasn't pysched about buying another Honda product, but this was the only outcome that made sense. If you can unload your damaged goods before total failure go for it. The dealers all know the tranny's fail and will simply wholesale your dying dog.
